The Importance of Our "Daily Checks" at Canine To Five Detroit

Here at Canine To Five, we care about our pack as if they were our own dogs. We strive to provide a safe and controlled play environment for every pooch, but some like to play rough! Dog play includes running and chasing, mouthing and pawing, jumping and rolling.

With all this fun going on, our pack leaders don’t always notice every bump or scratch your dog may endure throughout the long day with their friends. It’s for that reason we go through a daily process called “checks.”

Every day, our pack leaders conduct a detailed, hands-on inspection of each and every dog in our pack. We wait until the end of the day, around 3 p.m., right before they start heading home. The dogs know the routine, and by this point in the day they are tired out from play and ready for some one-on-one time with a pack leader.

Here’s how checks work: one pack leader stays in a kennel, while another guides dogs into the kennel to be checked over. We load 6 to 8 dogs into the kennel at once; this way the handler inside can easily control and go over a one small group at a time. If your dog comes to Canine To Five often, they know the drill. They are eager to get into the kennel, and some even line up for their turn!

The pack leader in the checking kennel takes a close look at each dog’s ears, eyes, mouth, and feet, and also feels them over for anything out of the ordinary. This is how we can let you know if your dog has dirty ears, has lost a tooth, needs a nail trim, or if they sustained a few scratches while playing with their pals.

Our attention to detail even allows us to find things that might otherwise go unnoticed. Just listen to what Casey’s dad had to say about our checks process:

“The Canine To Five Team was directly responsible for alerting us to an unknown growth by Casey’s lymph nodes. They pointed this out to us immediately when we picked Casey up that day. We then took him straight to our vet where he received the medication he needed to treat the growth. Without their thorough attention to Casey’s well-being, who knows how long it would have gone untreated? Our thanks go to them for taking care of Casey as if he were their own!”

Its reasons like these that make the meticulous checks process all the more worth it for our staff. Doing checks on every dog, every day, is just one of many ways we ensure that Canine To Five is as safe and as happy a place as it can be for our four-legged friends, and your four-legged family.
